Why Do I Write These?

I choose to honor the principles that made the show a success, and connected us to the characters. After a number of seasons, viewers fell in love with the show, not because of the cases they were working, it was about the connection between the characters, and the feeling that 'family' was not just a word, it was a reality. The viewers wanted and needed that family concept. The last couple of seasons, that concept, family, and the development of the characters, either started disappearing, or the character development stagnated.  I decided to bring both to life again " - Lee Goff
I was a fan of the NCIS TV Show. I followed the exploits and life of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his team, appreciating and respecting the talented writers and actors that made up the series. In early 2019, I realized I was more a fan of what I wanted them to do, waiting patiently for some character development, some new scenery, basically anything that told me the show was evolving. In late 2019, I started skipping the series, no longer interested in watching what hadn't changed. I still watch some, but I'm no longer invested in the characters. But...I choose to honor the principles that made the show a success, and connected us to the characters. After a number of seasons, it wasn't about the case, it was about the connection between the characters, and the feeling that 'family' was not just a word, it was a reality.

The writers for the show owed me nothing. These writers have kept the NCIS TV show successful. It was simply a matter of the show no longer tugging at my heartstrings, inspiring me,  there was never going to be another love interest for Gibbs, the character of Bishop was evolving into a selfish "I'm going to do what I want to do no  matter if it hurts the team", and Torres was reduced to one-liners and comic relief. McGee was never allowed to evolve into a leader, Palmer was introduced in 2004, and in 2019, he's the same guy, same fears, same maturity level. His wife, Breena, dies. We learn this 2 weeks after her death. I'm not sure the TV show fans ever forgave the writers for announcing her death in this manner. I simply shrugged and realized many in the viewing audience saw what I felt, the writers either had forgotten that the audience had emotional ties to the TV characters (what every TV show dreams of) or maybe the writers didn't realize the emotional attachment the audience had to these characters.
"There were too many loose ends, too many plot lines unanswered or unaddressed - I decided to address them" - Lee Goff

Why Screenplay Style?

Bottom line, I could gripe and refuse to watch the show, or I could do something about it. I had written and published 3 novels, was known for character development and dialogue, so, I wrote a few NCIS plots and stories, screenplay style. I had just finished writing the screenplay for a short documentary and found it challenging. You cannot dictate the readers' emotions as you can storybook style, you have to set the scene, develop the surroundings, and let them react as they will. It's a challenge to the writer; just how good are you? Then, as a semi-joke, I posted the sreenplay story on the largest Facebook Fan site around, NCISfanatic, and got a relatively encouraging response...one story led to another, then I decided to write a storyline that played off the series, but went a different direction than the current show. The response was overwhelming. There was a hunger out there for the characters to be developed, for some romance to continue, and an even stronger hunger for the "Family' feeling the TV show hinted at. The readers demanded more, so I gave them more, almost 2 years worth, sometimes daily.

If you are a chauvinist, you will hate these stories.
If you think that makes me feminist, you'd be wrong on that count too. I am a realist. I know the role a man plays in this world, and I also know the power a woman has. You will find womanhood both celebrated and poked fun at. You will also find 'manhood' celebrated and poked fun at. In the end, I hope that you will find in these stories a celebration of what we have in common, heart, soul, and love of family, equally distributed between male and female. You will see that I celebrate love, commitment, and friendship. I like romance, and I like happy endings, or at least a nice bow tying things up. God knows we have enough sad endings in life.

I am proud of my work. My only hope is that you enjoy the stories and find yourself cheering, crying, laughing, whatevering, escaping for a short time from this rear-whipping that life can be. In the end, I love the show. As frustrating as it can be, I still love it. But...I think it can be better

THE AUTHOR

I had no idea these stories were going to have the impact on people that they do. I owe them the best I can produce. These readers are family now"

Sample Scene Showing Bishop's Growth

Here's a sample of where I've gone. In a current Episode, "The Man With The Crystal Ball", the team is looking for a brilliant Chinese-American NSA analyst, missing for 3 years. They find out he had a modest second home  he lived at to experience 'real life' with his family. This scene has Gibbs asking Bishop, "Where do you want to die?"...In my stories, Bishop is now married to Torres..They have a newborn child...I hope this gives you a sample of where I go...and above all, I hope you enjoy it!

McGee: “FBI doesn’t think he’ll go to the house...They think he’ll run”
Gibbs:”Yea..I heard”
Bishop: “They have every road, airport, everywhere....blocked”
(Gibbs shrugs)
Gibbs: “Maybe they’re right...we’ll see”
Bishop: “I think he’ll head for his house....”
(Gibbs looks at Bishop...)
Gibbs: “Why?”
(She shrugs)
Bishop: “His neighbors....They love the guy. They loved all of that family...(pause) “I just think he’ll go back where he had a real life...Where he made a home”
(Gibbs stares at Bishop....)
Gibbs: “Is that important?”
(Bishop stares back at Gibbs.....she nods...)
Bishop: “Yes”
(Gibbs nods...small grin....)
Gibbs: “I remember a day when you didn’t think that way”
(She nods...)
Bishop: “I know...”
(Bishop looks over at Torres...finds him staring at her...studying her...she looks back at him...)
Bishop: “I found there were more important things than me...”
(Gibbs watches....then asks Bishop)
Gibbs: “Where do you want to die, Bishop?”
(Bishop looks at Gibbs...surprise....)
Bishop: “I...I don’t know, Gibbs...”
Gibbs: “Seriously...Bishop....it’s over...you’re bleeding out...you lost...where do you want to die?”
(She thinks...then looks at Torres...)
Bishop: “With him”
(Gibbs looks over at Torres...Torres shocked....)
Gibbs: “He’s dead too....you’re alone....”
(Bishop stares at Gibbs, disbelief....a pause...then she answers....)
Bishop: “Here...here at my desk...It’s here that every bad thing in my life ended...and every good thing in my life started...So....Here...at my desk...”
(Gibbs stares at Bishop.....He gets up...walks to her desk...she stares up at him as he stands over her...her face begins to show concern....)
Gibbs: “Bishop...I’ve never been more proud of you in my life....”
(Bishop blushes...leans back...looks at Gibbs, crosses her arms over her chest, mouth does the scrunchy thing..Gibbs turns to McGee)
Gibbs: “It’s your team now, Tim...This is your case....Where do you want me?”
(They look at Gibbs in astonishment....McGee answers confidently)
McGee: “At his house”
(Gibbs nods...then...)
Gibbs: “Mind backing me up?”
(McGee cocks his head....then stands, opens his desk drawer....)
McGee: “It would be an honor boss.....”

The NCIS Fans - A Cut Above

Over the last 2 years of writing for and interacting with them, I have come in contact with hundreds, if not thousands, of NCIS fans. I've interacted with fan bases before, as I have with people in general, and I have to say, this fan base, especially the readers and members on NCISfanatic, are smart, knowledgeable, and to sum it up, are a cut above the norm. They are intelligent, passionate, realistic, and extremely knowledgeable. The NCIS producers should show these folks some love. They deserve it. They are what made the show what it is

What Are The Readers Saying?

"Better than the TV Show!"

"They should hire Lee to write the show! He could save it!"

"I cry, I laugh, then I cry some more. How do I describe how these stories affect me?"

"YES! This what the TV show should have done!"

"I feel like I'm right alongside every character, living and seeing what they see!"
